The final term in most states and territories is about to begin and that will be a wrap for this year.
My work in schools with students and teachers during term 3 has continued and at the risk of making it all a bit too simple here are 4 observations (that build on the last two – show kids you’re happy to be there and get them engaged) I reckon are spot on:
The most effective teachers in maths (or anything for that matter) are the ones that:

1. Talk less and listen more (not quite in line with the direct instruction approach!)
2. Record on a smartboard/TV or whiteboard what kids tell you or what you are explaining to them
3. Don’t presume student don’t know content or a skill just because you have taught that topic yet
4. If you don’t ask (students) – you don’t find outBuilding Deep Understanding of the Big Ideas in Number through the Four

Proficiencies and Connected Learning.
Well, here it is – the last webinar for the team of Michael Minas and Rob Vingerhoets.

I may have missed one but my reckoning we’ve done 50 webinars over this maths professional development journey (it started in 2020 in the middle of the Rona) and it has been fun and, for the literally thousands of participants over that time – I hope it’s been enjoyable, engaging and worthwhile.

It’s been a very good run but all things must come to an end and this final webinar for 2025 will be it. We are very keen to continue the same formula of philosophically sound, mathematically rich and classroom/teacher useful for our October 14 session.

This 4th webinar will have a focus on the proficiency of Understanding and the vehicle for getting a deeper understanding of Understanding will be fractions/decimals and percentages. Foundation kids have a great knowledge of and appreciation for fractions and the concept of a half – of two bits being equal or fair – is well established in their early years. This webinar builds on that base and we take you right through Foundation to Upper Primary with tasks and background knowledge.

Mike and I want to enable you, the teachers, to approach fractions in a confident way that ensures that Understanding proficiency, as it applies to fractions/decimals and percentages.

Here’s the link to get your tickets direct from Eventbrite
https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/building-conceptual-understanding-of-fractional-thinking-tickets-1115127820329?aff=oddtdtcreator

or you can email me – rvec@bigpond.com and you I can organise a direct invoice to you or your school.

PS: it may be my last webinar with Mike but I will be very much around in 2026.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”Row” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.24.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_line_height=”2.2em” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” width=”100%” min_height=”275.8px” custom_padding=”0px|||0px||” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Other Announcements

Rob Vingerhoets Educational Consultancy now has a facebook page!

There is a page where you can find Rob’s recent articles and learn about his maths ‘philosophy’ and approaches to teaching maths in the classroom.
