{"id":1034,"date":"2024-02-06T04:20:20","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T04:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/robvingerhoets.com.au\/maths\/?p=1034"},"modified":"2024-02-06T04:20:21","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T04:20:21","slug":"too-much-time-with-struggling-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/robvingerhoets.com.au\/maths\/2024\/02\/06\/too-much-time-with-struggling-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"Too much time with struggling kids"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Your problem\/challenge\/dilemma is as old as teaching Renee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The struggling kids need you but how do you balance the time with them so the other kids get your<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>time as well AND you get to observe them while they\u2019re working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These are just tips from what I\u2019ve learnt from many years of teaching in classrooms \u2013 Finding a rock solid solution isn\u2019t easy:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I set myself no longer than about 2 minutes (I don\u2019t constantly look at my watch) to spend with anyone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With the struggling kids I always leave them with a task to tackle and reassure them that I will be back or that they can come and get me to show me what they\u2019ve done \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">as long as they have had a go<\/span>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> The important thing here is to try and break the cycle of learned dependency that so many struggling kids fall into.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They earn your time and attention by listening\/trying a task you set them and they soon learn that you won\u2019t just sit there with them. You will sit, you will help\/guide, you will set a task and you will leave BUT you will be back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Really effective teachers are always on the move trying to spend quality time with as many kids as possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This may well mean that you don\u2019t get to every kid in every lesson.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don\u2019t even try to \u2013 I get to as many as I can \u2013 I spend quality time with them (you can offer a lot advice\/assistance\/support\/encouragement\/challenge in approx. 2 minutes) \u2013 revisit kids who need support\/challenge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sit your struggling kids with middle of the range kids and encourage them to ask questions and look at the more competent kids\u2019 work \u2013 the more open-ended your work is the more effective this becomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t just a take a group for the sake of having a group. Sometimes it\u2019s efficient to have a group where they all have the some misconception or they are all missing the same skill \u2013 but establish that AFTER they have started on the task. That\u2019s efficient teaching but I too often see teachers take a group of strugglers before the task has even started.
